No invites for Fashion Week? Try these … September 9, 2009
Just as we were dithering about what to do, Newsday.com comes up with solutions:
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – that very exclusive, invitation-only (sorry, you’re soooo not invited) fashion takeover of New York City – kicks off Thursday morning. But, don’t feel left out, because Thursday evening it’s “Fashion’s Night Out,” an open-to-the-public fashion invasion of epic proportions. Starting around 6, with most participating stores open until 11 p.m., think celebrities, designer appearances (Oscar de la Renta sings at his Madison Avenue store), free stuff, lessons (cha-cha at Kate Spade?) and all-around wacky happenings (ping-pong with Stuart Weitzman). More than 700 retailers in the metro area are participating, along with events in other fashion capitals around the world. …
Fashionista Must: The September Issue September 6, 2009
Conde Nast once called me to interview for a fact-checker position at Vogue. I turned it down, declaring indignantly that I was an editor, not a lowly miserable factchecker for Vogue, a punching bag for staff editors. This, of course, was in the 1990s, long before The Devil Wears Prada and now The September Issue. Really, if I had played my cards right, I could have written Devil before that writer had finished fifth grade, and better, I like to think, hah!
I wouldn’t turn that job down now, if only to be inside the citadel doors; I imagined at the time that I had much bigger fish to fry than to get sidetracked into Vogue factcheckerdom. But since I was too foolish to leap at an opportunity to work at Vogue when Conde Nast called, I can just go see The September Issue, an almost frightening insider documentary based on the production of the September 2007 Vogue, the biggest ever.
Now playing in New York theaters and opening in Los Angeles and other select theaters around the country on September 11th. Learn more about The September Issue here …
Barney’s Warehouse sale this weekend in NYC (through Sept. 7) September 5, 2009
Walk, don’t run to the Barney’s Warehouse sale at 17th btw Sixth and Seventh Avenues. You’ll find Valentino, Burberry, Armani, Givenchy and more at prices up to 75% off. Find it here!
- Survival tips:
- Bring only your purse and enter via the downstairs men’s department so that you can bypass the bag check line!
- Wear leggings and a close-fitting shirt so that you can try on in any aisle without stripping down (the dressing area is a tiny cramped vortex of naked women and flying couture—once you enter you may never get out.)
- Use the mirrors in the men’s department and pay down there, too. It’s cooler and more civilized. (No man would ever survive the pandemonium of the upstairs women’s department at the Warehouse Sale.)

Interview with Matthew Williamson on HauteMimi August 24, 2009
Check out what one of my fave designers has to say on HauteMimi:
GT: What was the initial inspiration for the new Autumn Winter Collection?
MW: This season I wanted to continue the two key themes of shape and texture from my Pre Fall 09 collection. The silhouette is fairly extreme, with the oversized outerwear and knitwear balancing out with nipped tulip skirted dresses and long lean trouser shapes. The waistline in particular is defined by strong tailored lines, wide heavily beaded belts or simply by the considered placement of the prints. The ‘power’ shoulder has also returned for Winter, particularly in seen in the zig zag wool weave, where the chevron curved seams emphasis the strong lines.
