Tres Amigos: The best suburban Tex-Mex in Austin August 17, 2009

tresamigoMost people talk about Austin and its hip ways and amazing music scene, but the Austin of my childhood was an affluent suburban utopia of spanking new stucco houses with azure swimming pools perched on arid mesas. I’m back visiting again and rediscovering Tres Amigos, the best suburban Tex-Mex anywhere. So if you need a break from Austin’s terminal hipness, take a comfortable walk on the bland suburban side and indulge yourself at Tres Amigos. Cheever-esque pool party to follow. Since his death Thursday, Les Paul has been eulogized as an innovator and visionary who influenced modern music like no one else.

That influence is still being felt today among guitar players of all ages. We asked several local musicians to talk about Les Paul and what his life and accomplishments mean to them.

Here’s what they had to say:

Rashied Ali, free-jazz drummer, dies in NYC at 76

This is from a musician friend: “I am very saddened to inform you that the great Rashied Ali left us yesterday.” (August 12):

Free Wordless Music: 200 Electric Guitars at Lincoln Center Out of Doors August 8, 2009

rhys_chathamFree tonight at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors series. My friend Joe is Guitarist #133 (soprano), a shredder among shredders. His recommendation: “Bring earplugs.”

Wordless Music:
Liquid Liquid
Rhys Chatham: A Crimson Grail for 200 Electric Guitars

For club-music mavens, the return of New York’s seminal breakbeat artistes Liquid Liquid is a reminder that in the beginning freestyle dancers romped and stomped to the rhythms of percussionists. Two hundred electric guitars and basses line the park and plug in for the world premiere of Rhys Chatham’s A Crimson Grail for 200 Electric Guitars.

WHEN:
Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 7:30 pm

WHERE:
Damrosch Park Bandshell

MORE INFORMATION:
Presented in collaboration with Wordless Music. Commissioned by Lincoln Center for Lincoln Center Out of Doors.

bridgetIf you’re out in the Hamptons this weekend, my friend Bridget is having a gallery opening with a whole new group of paintings.
